The Laconian Gulf area is where ARCHELON basically operates, the Association for the protection of the sea turtle, with a mission to observe and protect the species. In 1989 in Laconia, in cooperation with the local fishermen, began, in pilot mode, the first fishing program in Greece.

The extensive dunes and beaches of the Laconian Gulf are an important breeding site for the Caretta-Caretta sea turtle, especially the Mavrovouni beach area. Evrotas Delta is a natural habitat of outmost importance, which has been included in the European network “Natura 2000”, with the Green turtle (Chelonia mydas) and the sea lily (Pancratium maritirium), or “lily of the Virgin Mary” as we locals call it (grows in the sand and has an amazing smell), as its principal protected species.
